     Chronological development of The Surat Electricity Company Limited

Government of Bombay granted License on 10 th April 1918 for a period of 50 years to European businessmen at Bombay. A partnership firm was opened between The KILLICK NIXON & COMPANY and CALLENDER’S CABLE CONSTRUCTION COMPANY LIMITED, LONDAN under Section 9(2) of the INDIAN ELECTRICITY ACT, 1910. for carrying out business of generation and distribution of electrical energy in franchised area of 52 sq. kms. in the city of Surat.

THE SURAT ELECTRICITY COMPANY LIMITED was incorporated and registered at Bombay on 22 nd June 1920.

Land Purchased on February 02, 1921 from Khanshaheb Esufally Ebrahimji vide Document No. 321 for Powerhouse. The land popularly known as “Dad A Elahi” originally belonged to Nawab Mir Muzfarkhan.

The Company established a Diesel Generating Plant with the installed capacity of 282 kW and gave the first electric connection to in May’ 1922.

Surat City was illuminated by Electric Streetlights as per agreement with Municipality.

Probably, Surat was the first city of Gujarat to be illuminated by street lights.

The land was part of property known as Dad .A. Elahi, originally belonging to Nawab Mir Muzjafarkhan. Document was registered in name of THE SURAT ELECTRICITY COMPANY LIMITED on November 22, 1938 vide Document No.5558.
