Guided by its commitment to preserve the environment, Torrent Power has taken several steps to sustain the ecological balance. All generation plants of Torrent Power adhere to the stringent environment preservation and pollution control norms. Torrent Power has also undertaken development of vast green belts and afforestation in the plant area and at ash disposal sites. 90 meter tall chimneys for better dispersion of flue gases in the air, very high efficiency electrostatic precipitators to remove fly ash from gases emitted from chimneys, regular monitoring of pollutants like Sulfur Oxides, Nitrogen Oxides and Stack Pollution Monitoring in flue gases – these are just some of the initiatives that reflect Torrent’s commitment to environment care. Torrent continues to use imported, low ash coal to reduce ash production and regularly carries out environment audit through Gujarat Pollution Control Board approved auditors. The recent initiative of replacement of the present wet ash handling system with a dry ash handling and disposal system at a cost of approx. Rs. 25 crores will reduce the water consumption significantly by almost 10,000 m3/day. Additionally, this will facilitate availability of dry, reactive ash for potential ash utilization in manufacture of cement, ceramic products, brick and other building materials.
